Jabba the Hutt pillow and Christmas lights pattern Finished Object Fridays #4

crochet Christmas light pattern

Last year I really wanted a new Christmas decoration for the house but being on a tight law school loan budget, I needed to make something myself!  I came up with a pattern for large light bulbs and sold them locally and in my Etsy shop.  They sold quickly so I talked with Jennifer from Craftsanity and she agreed she’d like to feature them in this year’s Winter issue of Craftsanity.  This year I scaled the pattern to include a small and medium size as well as the larger light bulbs and sent the pattern off to Craftsanity.  I was super excited when I learned she had decided to feature the pattern on the front of a special PDF gift issue for her subscribers – how fun!  You can find the Winter craft PDF magazine over here at her site.  If you aren’t familiar with Craftsanity, you should check it out!  Jennifer did a podcast for a few years interviewing designers, crafters, and makers and I was super inspired by the interviews.  She is now publishing a great indie craft magazine covering lots of different crafts and interesting interviews.

Star wars sewing

Here’s Jabba the Hutt hanging out on my son’s bed!  Sometime recently my son was checking out the Star Wars Craft Book by Bonnie Burton which was a gift from my MIL last Christmas.  This craft idea of making a large Jabba pillow was in the book and my son mentioned in passing that he’d love one for his bed.  He’s a HUGE Star Wars fan.  Being a 9 year old boy, I have found it difficult to find crafty items to make for him that he would love and not just tolerate (really, what’s the point of all those hours if the recipient isn’t going to love what you make?!)

Linking up with some fellow crafters for Finished Object Fridays over at Tami’s Amis, Natural Suburbia and Frontier Dreams!

  1. I love those Christmas light bulbs – maybe I’ll be able to make some this year for the 2013 Christmas season. They seem like they would be great to give to my little boy and maybe would distract him from the actual lights. That Jabba pillow is amazing!

Thx! I have used all 3 sizes for gifts or decorations in our house! I used Noro yarn with the medium sized bulbs to make ombre lights and they turned out super cool!

What a great Christmas craft those lights are! The would look so cute on a fireplace mantle!

I bet your son was thrilled with his Jabba the Hut pillow – how cool!

Oh, I agree. How could you refuse a request like this? The pillow looks fantastic!

  4. Greetings! I’ve been reading your web site for a while now and finally got the courage to go ahead and give you a shout out from Iowa. Just wanted to tell you keep up the excellent work!

The pillow is amazing – both my kids AND the 2 neighbor kids love it!

Awww…thx! It was fun to make although challenging to get the proportions correct! I used a body pillow, 3 regular sized pillows, a pillowcase with beanbag filler, and then poly-fil as the base then covered it in batting, and sewed muslin around it to make it a GIANT pillow form before wrapping it in the sheet and doing the body and face details. It looked like a much smaller project than it turned out to be…!
